Welcome to the DUFAS team! We are very happy with our new colleague Gerwin van de Steeg as regulatory affairs manager. His knowledge and experience make him a valuable addition to the team. To get to know Gerwin better, we asked him a few questions.
What is your (work) background?
Over 20 years ago, I started in the investment department of Rabobank. After various follow-up positions in risk and compliance within the bank, I made the switch to the AFM in 2016. Here I worked for over five years as a supervisor of the asset management sector. After brief periods at KPMG and Tower Research Capital, I recently set up my own compliance consulting business, helping clients with strategic and operational compliance issues.
Where does your strength lie? And in what ways do you expect to help the DUFAS team with that?
My experience on "multiple sides of the table" means that I have worked from the perspectives of both regulator, consultant and internal compliance professional. This helps me to understand different viewpoints and interests within the financial sector. I combine this versatile background with substantive knowledge and a pragmatic mindset. In my role as interim regulatory affairs manager, I expect to use this combination of perspectives and expertise to optimally support the DUFAS team in a short period of time.
How do you see the future of finance?
To best serve society and solve social issues, I believe it is essential for capital to move freely and be restricted as little as possible by national borders. This is in line with the DUFAS position that the Capital Markets Union (CMU) plays a crucial role in promoting cross-border capital flows within the EU. My hope and expectation is that a European capital market will actually be created, and that the necessary steps to do so will be taken in the coming years. The realization of the CMU will not only stimulate economic growth, but also contribute to financial stability and a more efficient distribution of resources in Europe.
