What is your (work) background?
I have a broad background in academia, financial supervision (AFM), and the banking sector. In my most recent role at KPMG, I advised financial institutions, industry associations, and government agencies on anti-money laundering regulations and financial sanctions.
What are your strengths, and how do you expect to use them to help the DUFAS team?
My dissertation focused on the effectiveness of anti-money laundering supervision in the European Union—a topic that has been neglected for years in both academia and practice. I continue to find it a fascinating subject, which is why, in recent years, I have specialized in regulatory developments surrounding the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) and the European anti-money laundering package—one of the key topics for the asset management sector in 2026/2027.
Thanks to my background, I understand how European regulations are developed, I know how regulators think, and—more importantly—I know how to translate complex legal jargon into practical and ambitious requirements. I bring in-depth AML(A) knowledge to the DUFAS team and DUFAS members, and in the coming period I will assist in analyzing new standards and guidelines and submitting consultation responses. I also provide support to members on behalf of DUFAS with the practical preparations for the AMLR, which will take effect on July 10, 2027, and I serve as the point of contact for the AFM on this topic.
How do you see the future of finance?
I am optimistic, and I also believe that the financial sector will benefit from more harmonized European regulations regarding the prevention of money laundering, terrorist financing, and targeted financial sanctions. Asset managers often operate across borders and may currently face varying requirements and interpretations. Admittedly, the new rules place significant demands on financial institutions in terms of preparation, but at the same time, they now also offer the opportunity to implement important reforms at the policy and organizational levels and to make smart use of technologically innovative solutions. This requires a substantial investment, but once that foundation is solid, the sector will be even better positioned to contribute to a strong Dutch and European economy and society.
